Prompt Care When Dental Problems Can’t Wait

Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly, and knowing where to turn can make a stressful situation easier to manage. At Heyday Family Dental, we provide emergency dental care for patients experiencing urgent dental pain, swelling, broken teeth, lost restorations, and other unexpected problems.

Our family-owned dental practice serves patients in Keller, Alliance, North Fort Worth, and surrounding DFW communities. When possible, we make every effort to evaluate urgent dental concerns promptly and help you understand the next steps for treatment.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

  • A dental emergency is any problem involving the teeth, gums, or surrounding tissues that causes significant pain, swelling, bleeding, trauma, or difficulty functioning normally.

  • Some dental problems require immediate attention, while others can be safely managed until a scheduled visit. If you are unsure whether your situation is urgent, contact our office so we can help determine the appropriate next step.

Severe Toothache

  • A severe or persistent toothache can be caused by several conditions, including deep decay, a cracked tooth, inflammation of the dental nerve, or infection.

  • Pain that is spontaneous, keeps you awake at night, worsens with biting, or is accompanied by swelling should be evaluated promptly.

  • Our goal is to identify the source of the pain and recommend the most appropriate treatment to relieve your symptoms and protect the tooth whenever possible.

Facial Swelling or Dental Infection

  • Swelling in the gums, jaw, face, or neck may indicate a dental infection and should not be ignored.

  • Dental infections can sometimes spread beyond the tooth and surrounding tissues. Prompt evaluation is important, especially when swelling is increasing or accompanied by fever, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, or significant facial asymmetry.

  • In certain situations, treatment may involve drainage, root canal treatment, extraction, medication, or referral for a higher level of care.

  • If you are experiencing difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing facial swelling, or other severe symptoms, seek emergency medical attention.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

  • A tooth can break from trauma, biting hard foods, grinding, large existing fillings, or decay.

  • Treatment depends on how much tooth structure has been lost and whether the nerve or root has been affected. Smaller fractures may be repaired with bonding or a filling, while more extensive damage may require a crown, root canal treatment, or extraction.

  • If part of the tooth has broken off, bring the fragment with you if possible.

Knocked-Out Tooth

  • A permanent tooth that has been completely knocked out requires immediate attention.

  • Handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root. If it is dirty, gently rinse it without scrubbing. If possible, carefully place it back into the socket without forcing it.

  • If the tooth cannot be repositioned, keep it moist in milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation solution and seek dental care as quickly as possible.

  • Do not attempt to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth.

Lost or Broken Filling

  • A lost or damaged filling can leave the underlying tooth sensitive and vulnerable to further damage.

  • Avoid chewing on the affected side and contact our office for an evaluation. Depending on the condition of the tooth, the filling may be repaired or replaced, or additional restorative treatment may be needed.

Lost or Broken Dental Crown

  • A crown can occasionally loosen, fracture, or come off.

  • If your crown comes out, keep it in a safe place and bring it with you to your appointment. Avoid using household glue or attempting to permanently reattach it yourself.

  • We will evaluate the tooth and crown to determine whether it can be recemented or if a new restoration is needed.

Cracked Tooth

  • Cracked teeth can cause sharp pain when biting or sensitivity to temperature, although some cracks may initially cause few symptoms.

  • Because cracks can extend deeper into the tooth over time, early evaluation is important.

  • Treatment may range from bonding or a crown to root canal treatment or extraction, depending on the location and severity of the crack.

Dental Trauma

  • Accidents, sports injuries, and falls can damage the teeth, lips, gums, or jaw.

  • Even when a tooth does not appear visibly broken, trauma may affect the root, nerve, or surrounding bone.

  • If you experience a dental injury, contact our office as soon as possible so the area can be properly evaluated.

Emergency Tooth Extraction

  • Sometimes a tooth cannot be predictably restored because of severe decay, fracture, infection, or other damage.

  • When extraction is the most appropriate option, we will explain why and discuss what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

  • When appropriate, we can also discuss options for replacing the missing tooth after healing, including dental implants, bridges, or other restorative solutions.

What Should I Do Before My Emergency Dental Visit?

Until you can be evaluated:

  • Rinse gently with warm water if the area is irritated or dirty

  • Avoid chewing on the affected side

  • Use a cold compress on the outside of the face for swelling or trauma

  • Keep broken tooth fragments or lost crowns and bring them with you

  • Do not place aspirin directly on the gums or tooth

  • Avoid attempting to repair a tooth with household adhesives

If you experience severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, significant facial trauma, or other potentially life-threatening symptoms, seek emergency medical care.

Same-Day Emergency Dental Appointments

  • We understand that dental emergencies do not always happen at convenient times.

  • When scheduling allows, Heyday Family Dental offers same-day emergency evaluations for urgent dental concerns.

  • Calling our office as early as possible gives us the best opportunity to find an available appointment and prepare for your visit.
